A beautiful one-of-a-kind Victorian (1860) solid 22 karat gold ring with a carnelian intaglio of dog. The setting, with full English hallmarks, is streamlined and lovely. The hallmarks from left to right in the ninth photograph: Sponsor's (Maker's) Mark - J. M (Joseph Marlow, Jeweler) Standard Mark - Crown (Hallmarked before 1975) Fineness Mark - 22 (22 ct) Assay Office - Sideways Anchor (Birmingham) Date - Uppercase L (1860).
The solid gold bezel fits securely around the entire depth of the rich orange carnelian stone. The setting is secure, highlights the intaglio to perfection, and the band is very comfortable on the hand. The actual carving skillfully depicts a dog running in full stride. Dogs were symbols of fidelity in Victorian times, and the artist captured the movement and grace of this loyal animal. Measurements: US ring size 7.Although it will read larger on a jeweler's size ring, it is actually a 7. My jeweler told me it reads differently due to the nature of the stone in the setting, but it fits a size 7. I believe this ring could be resized, but please confer with your jeweler about this possibility. Intaglio is approximately 9/16" long, 3/8" tall, and 3/16 deep. There is a small ding on the underside of the carnelian which is not visible from the top where the dog is carved and does not detract from the beauty of the piece.
There are also a few minor scratches on the ring. A very rare piece in wonderful condition for its age. Comes gift boxed for giving!
